My support is contingent on their being developed transparently, responsibly & in a manner that will not inequitably burden communities. Their water and electricity usage shouldn’t be hidden in nondisclosure agreements & their development should include strong energy efficiency standards, renewable power use, & careful water & land management to minimize environmental impact & ensure local communities benefits. Development should create high-skilled jobs & attract technology investment.
While escalating utility costs in Maryland are driven by rising fuel prices, supply constraints, and increasing demand on the electric grid, knowing that some of this is associated with data centers, I have introduced legislation to prohibit state government from entering into NDAs with data center developers. This would help communities to understand the true costs of these developments in terms of things like water and electricity consumption, protecting us from unpredictable price increases.
Improving public transportation across Maryland is essential for our economic growth, mobility, & equity. Our transit must be more reliable & better connect people to jobs, like at Tradepoint, education, & healthcare while reducing traffic congestion & pollution. Expanding bus, rail, & regional transit options, like the Redline will support families, strengthen local economies, & create a more sustainable transportation system that benefits both urban & rural communities throughout Maryland.
I will be advocating for funding for: (1) various nonprofits’ capital projects in District 44 to receive funding so that they may continue helping to feed, train, & provide other services to Marylanders, (2) our schools have the financing they need, & (3) Western Baltimore County Redevelopment Authority for operational funding to help support communities in western Baltimore County.
I have supported the immigrant community in Maryland since my first term which began 2015. Most recently, I (1) voted for SB 1 (Law Enforcement Officers - Prohibition on Face Coverings), and (2) introduced a floor amendment making SB 245 (Public Safety - Immigration Enforcement Agreements – Prohibition) an emergency bill. I also sponsored SB 55 which is intended to classify less serious traffic infractions as secondary offenses thereby limiting interactions with law enforcement for everyone.
