Any new data centers must cover the cost of their electricity; local residents must not bear the burden of further rising energy costs from these facilities. We must also ensure that environmental impacts are mitigated and prioritize the escalating housing crisis when assessing land use. Data centers can create needed jobs and boost our local economy but our state and local governments must work together to ensure they do not threaten our communities.
Increased energy demand, a Republican led federal government who has cancelled clean energy projects that would provide affordable and environmentally friendly electricity for years to come, and a regional grid operator in PJM that is prioritizing profits instead of approving new electricity projects has created unbearably high energy costs for Marylanders. Maryland is leading by example and I am fighting corporate interests and PJM to remove these barriers, lower costs and preserve our future.
Our investments in public transportation like the Purple Line will finally connect some of our communities, but Upcounty residents in District 39 need to secure access in areas where the tracks do not reach. We need to increase bus routes and the roads that carry them to relieve congestion and give our residents the ability to access and grow the local economy. We must also continue prioritizing safe and widespread bike and pedestrian access.

As Chairwoman of the Budget & Taxation Education Subcommittee I ensure our public education system gives every child the access to the nation’s best schools. We’ve continuously protected our investment in schools despite deep cuts in other parts of the budget. Our budget also funds the public safety programs needed to keep communities safe without unfairly targeting communities of color and economic development programs like tax credits for biotech and job creation.
I always fight for immigrant communities; unfortunately, we are less safe now because ICE is abducting members of our communities and ripping children out of schools. I am the lead sponsor of SB810 which prevents school officials from working with ICE. As Majority Leader, I helped lead the passage of SB245 to prohibit local law enforcement from working with ICE. I also secured $1 million for a Gaithersburg community center for Latino and other immigrant youth and families.

I was born and raised in Maryland. I won’t let industry pressure damage our environment or raise costs for families. Unlike my opponent, I’ve refused all Big Tech donations and will oppose any datacenter that raises our utility or water bills. As a computer science and Stanford energy engineering graduate, I also know we can find a better path to modernizing our economy, resisting pressure from tech billionaires, building datacenters with 100% clean energy, and creating real local benefits.
Last year utilities spent over $2.2 million lobbying Maryland legislators, including my opponent. Many states have banned utilities from donating to campaigns because it creates a conflict of interest. It’s time for Maryland to change and elect leaders with a new vision. I’m not taking a penny of corporate money and will use my experience to help us deploy the low-cost solar and wind power we need while rewriting unfair rules so that datacenters can’t pass their costs onto Maryland families.
Absolutely. Our country is far behind our peer nations. What we consider bold is standard in much of the world. We should extend the Red Line to Germantown and connect it to the Silver Line at Dulles, enable two-way, all-day MARC service, and invest in high-speed rail with stops in Clarksburg and Frederick. This isn’t public transit vs. drivers. It’s about giving parents more time at home with their children. Better transit means fewer cars on the road and shorter commutes for everyone.
We can balance the budget if we take on the special interests that drive waste. One report found our state could save $520 million a year simply by eliminating for-profit middlemen in Medicaid—but those companies fund campaigns. Ending pay-to-play politics will allow us to cut waste and invest where it matters: fully funding our schools, including expanded vocational training and modernization for an AI-driven economy, strengthening our infrastructure, and fixing our broken healthcare system.
This is the issue of our time. In April 2025, the Maryland House passed multiple bills to stop ICE, but our state Senate leadership refused to act. Why? 3,300 Marylanders were detained by ICE in that year of inaction. We need Democrats who fight back. I have been a leader in mobilizing our community and I will act: Zero permits for this administration’s ICE. Zero information or access to our resources without a judicial warrant. This should already be law, but isn’t. I’m fighting to change that.

Data centers can support economic growth, but expansion must be carefully planned to protect the power grid, water resources, and surrounding communities. Maryland should require strong energy standards, transparent grid planning, and responsible siting so economic growth does not repeat the historic pattern of placing environmental burdens on already overburdened neighborhoods, often low-income communities and communities of color.
Utility costs are rising due to aging infrastructure, energy market volatility, and growing electricity demand on our regional grid. With an active young family at home, I personally understand the importance of managing utility bills to keep household budgets stable. Maryland should expand energy efficiency, strengthen consumer protections, and invest in clean energy that stabilizes long-term costs.
Yes. Transportation determines whether households can reach jobs, schools, and healthcare affordably. As a working mother commuting from Germantown into DC, I have experienced how unreliable transit threatens job stability, strains family budgets, and takes precious time away from loved ones. Maryland must expand reliable public transit so families can move safely and conveniently throughout the region.
My priorities are care (child, elder, and disability), housing, and healthcare because they determine whether households remain stable. As a working mother and former federal official who provided legislative and budget oversight for over $1 billion in workforce programs and managed federal housing assets at HUD, I will fight for childcare affordability, workforce housing, and expanding a diverse health workforce.
Immigrant households are vital to Maryland’s workforce, small businesses, and economic growth. I will support policies that expand access to workforce training, entrepreneurship, and language access to public services. I will also defend due process and oppose using local law enforcement to carry out federal immigration enforcement that undermines trust, safety, and economic participation.
