Maryland imports 40% of its energy from other states, which has been a major factor in rising electricity bills. Because of this power generation shortfall, large data center projects should provide or finance new power sources so they do not further increase costs for families. With these protections in place, counties should decide project locations through existing zoning and land-use processes and with community input.
Rising electricity bills are hitting families hard. Growing demand for electricity, greater reliance on imported energy from other states, and needed investments in transmission and grid reliability are only adding to these costs. Maryland needs to encourage new power generation so that it can produce more electricity, maintain a diverse and reliable energy mix, and ensure that growth in electricity demand is matched with new supply so that prices remain stable.
Maryland should focus on coordinating the transit systems we already have. Better connections, aligned schedules, and integrated fares between local transit and regional services would make commuting easier, expand job access, and improve mobility without requiring major new infrastructure.
Maryland’s budget should focus on three priorities: slowing the growth of spending to “live within our means,” demanding accountability for every dollar spent, and fixing our tax and regulatory system to focus on job growth and economic development. We must grow Maryland’s tax base and strengthen Maryland’s long-term finances by making our state the place where families and retirees want to live and can afford to live.
As the son of immigrants, I believe in legal immigration, access to education, and support for entrepreneurship so families can build businesses, create jobs, and achieve economic mobility.
