Data centers are coming. Currently, Maryland residents are paying for data centers in other states. Moving forward, we need to ensure that three criteria are met. First, any data center in has to be ratepayer-neutral. Meaning, we do not want customers to subsidize them by paying more. Secondly, they have to be infrastructure aligned, near transition lines. Third, it needs to be responsible. Community benefit agreements need to be in place.
Utility costs are too high. That is why this past session, I have focused on lowering utility costs and making Maryland more affordable. It has been a balancing act of managing costs while enhancing clean energy. During the current legislative session, we are holding utility companies accountable for higher costs while ensuring we put money back in customers' pockets. I, along with the rest of the D14 Team are making this a priority.
As Chairman, of the Capital Budget Subcommittee, I have worked to improve public transportation reliability and availability. In addition, I helped secure millions in pedestrian safety improvements in and around the Greater Olney Area, as well as adding more than 400 street lights in the greater Burtonsville area. Statewide, we need to take a balanced approach, ensuring people have access to public transportation while still investing in our critical road and bridge infrastructure.
I serve on the Senate Budget Committee. Every year, I work with my colleagues to balance the budget, invest in education, healthcare, and long-term budget stability. I created a program that has renovated and built more than 40 playgrounds for Montgomery County Public Schools, prioritizing lower-income areas. My top three budget priorities include, but are not limited to: Investing in public education, lowering health care costs, and protecting funding for those with developmental disabilities.
I have been extremely concerned with the overreach and aggressiveness of ICE and how President Trump has weaponized the agency against law-abiding Marylanders. In response, I co-sponsored legislation that prohibits ICE officers from covering their faces while engaging with the public. In addition, I supported legislation that limits local police cooperation with ICE.
For the greater immigrant community, I have helped allocate funding for cultural community centers & immigration legal services.
