Public health comes down to access, prevention, and accountability.
We need to ensure all residents can access care, invest in prevention like mental health and substance abuse programs, and maintain strong infrastructure like clean water and wastewater systems.
Supporting emergency services is also critical, and we must make sure taxpayer dollars are being used effectively to deliver real results.
With decades of experience in financial systems, budgets and data management along with my current service on the Ocean Pines Association, Budget and Finance Committee, I understand how to
analyze complex budgets, ask the hard questions and protect taxpayer dollars.
As the owner and publisher of ROC Edition, an independent community newspaper known as "The People's Paper," I have built a platform committed to transparency, factual reporting and accountability. I am running for Worcester County Commissioner, District 6, to ensure my district has strong, informed and independent representation at the county level.
My priorities are responsible growth, protecting taxpayers, and preserving community character.
Development must align with infrastructure and not create long-term costs for residents. We need to evaluate projects based on their full financial impact, not just short-term benefits.
At the same time, we must protect open space and ensure growth fits the character of our communities. And just as important, the process must be transparent so residents understand and have confidence in the decisions being made.
We grow jobs by creating a business-friendly environment, supporting local businesses, and investing in workforce development.
That means streamlining permitting, building a skilled workforce through education, and making smart infrastructure investments. At the same time, we must ensure any incentives provide real value to taxpayers.
Economic growth should benefit the entire community, not just a few.
We need to increase housing supply in a smart, responsible way that serves the entire community.
That means supporting workforce housing, reducing unnecessary barriers in zoning and permitting, and encouraging a mix of housing types. At the same time, we must ensure growth aligns with infrastructure and does not create new costs for taxpayers.
Worcester Co., has 4 Health Depts., 2 MAC Centers and 1 hospital with may satellite offices. In speaking with many people in my community the concern I hear voiced the most is not availablity but cost. For example we are an aging population and the cost of assisted living, nursing homes and private caregivers is unaffordable. A current budget cut proposal before our State Legislature will severely affect our families with disablilities. Local schools and health departments provide foundational help with health programs and counseling, but we need to address these growing care gaps. We need to work more closely with our faith based and civic groups for assisttance and incorporated more mobile health units to go into our rural areas.
I have a 41 year career in public education which included managing a $130,000,000 budget.
Lifelong resident of Worcester Co., I undertand the needs of our community and have a working knowledge of resources available to our community.
Own and operate 2 small family businesses an am well versed in "good" busniess practices; I have a strong working relationship with many business leaders in our community.
I have served on various business and civic boards such as: Taylor Bank, Community Foundation, Hudson Health Services, and Atlantic General Hospital Board, 3 years as Chairman.
We must preserve the natural beauty and resources that attract people to move here in the first place while at the same time have a well constructed comprehensive growth plan that encourages growth in housing and new businesses supportive of our community's needs.
Having grown up in a very different northern Worcester County, I appreciate the economic growth brought by modern development which has established a strong economic base for the County. However we must balance this progress with better more efficient planing to protect our rural character, The current planning and zoning process is too slow, cumbersome and expensive and requires a cooperative review by our planners, developers and citizens to develop a more streamline process. I hear many citizens express concern about growth along the MD Rt 589 and West Ocean City Rt 50 to Berlin corridor. Growth is good but we need preserve the natural attributes that attact people to move here to start with.
I have been questioned on how we will support job growth for the families moving into the area. Many of the new business developments will create job opportunites, however we need to ensure that we maintain the integrity of our rural style living. The Town of Berlin is a good example of this, they have maintained a "small town feel" while expanding business by cultivating an entrepreneurial infrasturcture. This type of forward thinking and planning has attracted new businesses and created jobs. This model can be used and modified for other areas in our entire county.
