Worcester County's population continues to skew to older adults. It's important that healthcare for this growing population be easily accessible. Also, the population must be continually made aware of programs sponsored by the county Health Department that improve the quality of living.
I have served as County Commissioner for three terms. I serve on the Maryland Association of Counties Board of Directors. I believe my experience during that time makes me qualified to continue in this position representing and advocating for my district.
Protecting local autonomy when it comes to land use policies is paramount. Increasingly, state initiatives have been attempting to apply a one-size-fits all approach across the state that is inconsistent with the character and heritage of Worcester County. Like many rural counties across the state, Worcester must continue to address this with state officials to affect a positive outcome.
Ensuring that county policies do not make the cost of doing business prohibitive. The county recently lowered the property tax rate by 3 cents which will save property owners hundreds, if not thousands of dollar, annually. I voted for this change. Economic growth hinges on a friendly business environment.
There are many dynamics that influence affordable housing. A number of State regulations (sprinkler regs, BAT systems) increase the cost of home construction and ownership by 25% to 30%, making it difficult for many to realize the American Dream of home ownership. Home builders are business people who look at the local regulatory environment to determine whether a housing project is feasible. Until the state recognizes and addresses the barriers blocking home construction investment, many contractors will look at neighboring Delaware and Virginia.
