The Sheriff is charged with the protection of all citizens and with enforcing the laws within the county, including those within corporate limits of any towns maintaining their own police force. The Sheriff is responsible for enforcing court orders and serving legal processes and notices issued by the various courts. The Sheriff is also responsible for the supervision and maintenance of the County Detention Center which includes the Day Reporting Center and for transporting prisoners. The Sheriff’s Office employs 200 officers and 50 support staff and is organized into three functional divisions: detention, patrol and judicial. Each Division is headed by a director who reports directly to the Sheriff. The Sheriff is elected for a four-year term and paid $126,630.

Over the past 3.5 years serving as Sheriff, I have gained invaluable experience leading the Sheriff’s Office. I previously retired as a Captain after 28 years with the Maryland Natural Resources Police. My leadership and experience prepare me to continue strengthening the Sheriff’s Office and ensure we are ready to respond to any incident while protecting the citizens of our communities.
I work closely with county residents, community organizations, and local leaders by maintaining open communication and transparency. I regularly attend community meetings to listen to concerns and collaborate on solutions that reflect community needs. By building partnerships, supporting local programs, and promoting accountability, we can strengthen public safety while fostering lasting trust between residents and the Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office is CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) certified, which means our policies and procedures are reviewed regularly to ensure best practices and accountability. We continually evaluate and update our policies to remain compliant with federal and state laws while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and service to the citizens we serve.
Since taking office in December 2022, I have made recruiting and retention a top priority. Our deputies recruit daily through positive interactions with citizens, supported by targeted advertising campaigns. I have increased employee pay by over 30%, helping retain both sworn and civilian staff. I will continue these successful recruiting and retention efforts while maintaining our employee motto: Family First.
My top priorities are continuing to provide superior service to the citizens of Washington County and maintaining a safe and secure community for both residents and visitors. I am also exploring the use of Drones as First Responders (DFR) to enhance deputy safety and provide additional support to fire and rescue personnel during emergency responses.
