DUTIES: Commissioners may exercise only the powers conferred by the Maryland General Assembly. These include: raising revenues to fund the capital and operating budgets of county departments and agencies; providing for the public health, safety, and welfare of county residents; adopting and updating the Land Use Plan and Zoning Ordinance and overseeing the development process; establishing, promulgating, and enforcing county rules, regulations, ordinances, policies, and procedures; and appointing boards, commissions, and task forces to advise them and make recommendations.SALARY: $12,000.TERM: Four years.HOW ELECTED: The county is divided into 5 districts and the voters in each district select one Commissioner. The Commissioners select a President and a Vice President from among their members for a 1-year term.
