I started my career right here in Prince George's County as a second grade teacher. For the past decade, I've championed equity from the halls of Congress to state government — designing programs, shaping policy, managing budgets, and developing great teachers who know how to teach all students well. As a PGCPS parent, I feel the urgency to ensure our children receive a world class education. I'm not coming with theories—I'm coming with real experience, real relationships, and real commitment.
I don't believe in banning books or materials with difficult content - full stop. However, schools must handle tough topics with sensitivity, careful planning, and family communication. I would ensure caregivers know their rights under District policy and encourage open dialogue — through 1:1 conversations, mediations with school teams, or roundtables — to reach resolution and strengthen the partnership between families and schools.
When students feel a sense of belonging, they fare better academically and emotionally. I support district-wide SEL standards with grade-level benchmarks to define what safe, supportive schools look and feel like. PGCPS has strong initiatives — community schools, mental health grants, surveys — now we need to integrate them and monitor progress to clear goals. I also support limitations on cell phones and other technology that may cause distractions or contribute to feelings of isolation.
This matters deeply to me as a PGCPS parent. Every child deserves access to AP classes, gifted programs, and qualified teachers — regardless of zip code, race, or origin. That includes students who are ready to be challenged and accelerated and those who need support to get on grade level. I will push for transparent, publicly accessible data to identify gaps in academics and staffing, advocate for equitable funding across all schools, and routinely engage families in budget decisions.
Great schools start with great teachers and principals - I know this from my experience in the classroom and as a state education leader. I support grow-your-own pipelines that recruit from our own community, such as teacher and principal apprenticeships. We must also pay teachers competitively—especially compared to neighboring districts — invest in content-specific coaching and development and establish clear career advancement pathways that do not always require leaving the classroom.
