Yes. Because in a one-party county like Montgomery County, appointment systems breed patronage and insider dealing that serves the party — not constituents. It also leads to corruption. Advertised vacancies seem to return insiders; insiders pick insiders. Special elections return the choice to voters where it belongs. Cost and low turnout should not be obstacles to democracy working.
This question is largely hypothetical because for 26 years all seats have been Democrat held. My criteria would be community ties, integrity, experience, and alignment with district values. I know genuine community care through my volunteer work with the Community Action Board, Charter Review Commission, and with the City of Gaithersburg, and my education and supervisory experience allows me to determine ability.
I am motivated by the opportunity to use my experience to grow our tent. With appointments from the County Executive and Mayor of Gaithersburg to work across legal affairs, low income communities, and bridge building — I know who lives here and what they care about. Having lived and worked in Europe, Africa, Asia — nine countries — I see the dots to connect in Montgomery County's growing populations many of whom share our Republican values. I would like to try my hand at reaching them.
If Republicans had the opportunity to fill vacancies by appointment, I commit to an open, advertised process with consistent criteria tied to community service. Drawing on my experience and community connections, I will recruit from communities our party has overlooked, advancing the best interests of the community through transparency at every level. Insiders picking insiders ends with me.
