I seek to give back to such a wonderfully diverse community that has given me and my family so much. I’d like to give back! Growing up with Army parents, as a veteran, and federal employee with the county’s largest employer – Aberdeen Proving Ground, I’ve had a few titles – system engineer, test engineer, and geographer. Prior and existing roles include community advocate, protester, campaign volunteer, state representative aid (PA), community fundraiser, and community and school volunteer.
Parents/guardians, teachers, and community raise and prepare students to be successful as adults. Working as a team is ESSENTIAL. Communication must be clear (e.g. languages and reading level), transparent, and timely. I will coordinate with County Council to build widely available, non-partisan surveys to better understand teacher/student/family/community needs and stakeholder management. Garnering feedback is critical for decisions with wide impact.
Along with the MSDE Blueprint for elevating educators and HCPS initiatives in support of the same goal, targeted surveys will identify and tailor benefit and award initiatives – time-off awards, professional development, etc. Focus on the BOE Strategic goals and work with County leaders to establish a predictable budget. Beyond retention, identify, implement, and evaluate broader improvements to redistribute workload, improve resource allocation, and better identify various needs.
I support student use of technology as an educational tool. This technology reduces classroom footprint, improves portability and mobility (when paired with internet), as students can take devices home for inclement weather or pandemic. Home internet access needs to be a part of this conversation. For student’s personal electronics, I support discussion and implementation of a “digital literacy, safety, and citizenship curriculum or mental health engagement for middle and high school students.
I am a life-long resident of Harford County and have served as Councilman for district E and Council President, totaling 20 years. I believe my experience and the dealings I have had throughout the years with the BOE prepare me to help lead the BOE in a better direction. We need to channel BOE funding to directly impact more positive learning experiences for our students. Implementation of virtual learning needs to go countywide. Our children are the future and deserve the best we can offer.
Working together is key, focusing on the common goal of providing quality education for students is paramount. Over a number of years, the Board has NOT been strong and has eroded the trust of citizens. It's time to lead in a better direction. Parents play a critical role and deserve to know what is going on in classrooms. Throughout my years, I have remained transparent and have proven that I can work to resolve issues amicably with colleagues
I believe positive school environments go a long way to retain good teachers. Working with principals and staff to foster that environment is crucial. We need to retain our quality staff. We also need to use careful consideration when moving teachers. Sometimes it's not always about the money. I will be supportive of dedicate staff doing their best to deliver quality education and instruction. I will also work with those who are driven to make their schools the best they can be.
Virtual learning should be implemented so excessive snow days can be avoided and the school year prolonged. Technology is a great tool when used to supplement and enhance a student's learning experience, but not in substitution of a teacher. Student's personal electronic devices need to be limited in the classroom. Many will disagree, but it just provides another distraction for students.
