There is nothing more important than our children's futures and I believe that by working together we can provide the best educational experiences for all children. I have spent the last 42 years working in education at all levels from PK to 12th grade as a teacher, school counselor and then school psychologist. I have also taught at the college level. I understand how schools work, listen to everyone's perspectives and am sensitive to the needs of all groups of children. Experience matters.
I believe that the role of parents and teachers is to work together to support a child's education. The Board's job is to create or amend policies to ensure student and staff safety and accountability, to provide students with the tools they need to succeed, to increase transparency so that stakeholders understand what rights they have in the education of children and how to access information, and to support educators. Resolving disputes begins with listening to all sides and working together.
I believe that all educational staff need strong and supportive mentors who guide, uplift and provide modeling for them to be effective in their roles. These mentors should not be in an evaluative role, but rather in a supportive role. I would like to see a policy that requires each educator to be assigned an experienced educator mentor for their first three years that is their "go to" person. Having a guaranteed support system in place will in turn help with recruitment and retention.
Technology should be used as a tool and should not replace good teaching by a highly qualified teacher. Because we live in a world that relies on technology in many ways, knowing how to appropriately, safely and effectively use technology, including AI, is a must. However, there should be a balance between the use of technology and other methods of learning such as hands-on activities and paper and pen tasks. Students' personal electronic devices should stay in lockers during the school day.
