I am running for my second term the County Board out of a sense of civic duty and a desire to be involved in serving the community my family and I have lived in for the past 24 years. Local elected officials can have a direct impact on addressing the many challenges their community faces, whether it be economic, environmental, or social concerns.
La Crosse County can play a vital role in supporting business development in Holmen by creating a conducive environment for growth, attracting investment, and providing resources tailored to the needs of local businesses. Such as, offering tax incentives, rebates, or subsidies for businesses that move to Holmen or expand their operations in the area could make the district more appealing.
Number one is affordable Housing: La Crosse County is growing, with more people moving in and a lot more demand for places to live, especially in La Crosse and surrounding areas like Holmen. But the supply of affordable homes hasn't kept up, so rent and home prices are climbing. Impact: This makes it harder for families on a budget—especially young families, seniors, and people just starting out in their careers. Number two, Workforce Shortages: Like many regions in Wisconsin and across the country, La Crosse County is facing a shortage of skilled workers in key sectors, including healthcare, manufacturing, and service industries.
Expanding affordable housing projects, incentivizing developers to build lower-cost housing, and offering financial assistance for first-time homebuyers could help alleviate the pressure. There could also be a focus on rehabilitating older properties for affordable housing. Collaborating with local schools, colleges, and technical training programs (e.g., Western Technical College) to provide more job-specific training, apprenticeships, and internship opportunities can help address this gap. Additionally, improving work-life balance, offering higher wages, and creating more flexible working conditions could help attract talent.
