During my time on the County Board, I have been able help keep our county the fifth lowest per capita taxing county in the state. At the same time, we have doubled the amount of money we spend on roads, we have reduced our debt load, maintained the second-highest bond rating, increased spending on rural broadband, dramatically reduced the number of homeless persons in our community and maintained our reputation as one of the safest communities in the state. I would like to continue to be a part of this record of accomplishment. I have shown that I know how to get things done.
In 2023 the Shared Revenue formula was updated to increase funding to local governments. Unfortunately, the formula is still well behind where it needs to be. Local governments are asked consistently to do more with less. The state should increase funding to local governments so we would be able to fund more emergency medical staff, pave more miles of road, and more all while decreasing property taxes.
With the cost of everything from health care to groceries on the rise the biggest issues facing our county right now are affordability and our tax burden. I’ve been proud of the fact that La Crosse County has been able to hold the line on our tax burden - we have the 5th lowest per capita tax rate in the State. That said, we can and should be doing more. We need to be doing what we can to bring down the costs of everyday goods and cut our property taxes. At the same time we need to ensure important and critical county services do not take a back seat.
I would bring everyone together to hash out a solution that works for all. My entire career has been about bringing people together. As County Board Chair, I worked with the public sector and private sector to create the West Salem Business Park. Today, that effort has transformed the property, and it will soon have a tax base of $58.7 million while hosting 250 family-supporting jobs. As a mediator, I work with competing interests to try to find mutually beneficial solutions. And as a State Representative, I have been the most bipartisan legislator over the last four sessions, meaning that I have been a key vote for moving critical policy forward when gridlock bogs down the legislative process. That leadership has been recognized with my appointment to lead bipartisan task forces on important issues from adoption to suicide prevention to artificial intelligence. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished so far, but there is so much more to do, and I'm ready to get to work.
