Joanna Drazkowski for La Crosse County Board District 18
My honest answer is that a friend asked me if I'd be interested in running. I gave it a lot of thought, making sure I would have the support at home, and that I would be able to honor the time commitment required of the position. Knowing my neighbors would be voting for me and placing their trust in me, I wanted to be certain I would fulfill this duty to the best of my abilities. My "yes" to running came from my love of La Crosse County and the people who live here. La Crosse County has been doing really great things. I want to be part of the push forward to continue to make this community a great place to live, work, and learn for everybody.
As I've spoken to residents in my district, a common theme is concern for each other. People want to know their neighbors can access help when needed. La Crosse County currently has resources across the Health and Human Services department to assist those struggling with homelessness (or maintaining housing), substance use disorder, mental health, and many other concerns. Not only is it important to maintain funding for these services, communication to the public of the services available is vital as well.
My opinion is that the top two issues facing La Crosse County are housing (affordability, homelessness, etc) and substance use disorders.
La Crosse County currently has plans in place to address both of these issues. Pathways Home is the 5-year plan, spearheaded by La Crosse County and the City of La Crosse, to reduce homelessness to functional zero by 2029. This means homelessness is a rare and brief occurrence rather than a longterm situation. The Opioid Settlement Plan is a 10-year initiative to tackle the opioid crisis in La Crosse County. This plan, along with other recovery services offered through the county, address overall substance abuse. To maintain effectiveness of both plans, it is essential to continue to track measurable benchmarks, be open to changing course if something isn't working or isn't sustainable, and continue to work with organizations in the county to achieve desired goals.
