I've served three full terms on the board. I want to continue to put the experience and insight I've gained to good use for the community.
Funding is the key resource that enables the county to deliver the services needed in my district and throughout the county. For the 12th District and the county as a whole, most of that money comes from the state and federal governments. I would like to see continued and strengthened commitment to providing that essential funding on the part of our partners in state and federal government. Property tax revenue makes a relatively small amount of the county's total revenue, and I don't want to see that share grow.
The shortage of affordable housing, which is a contributing factor to homelessness, and the shifting of our demographics where the older segment of our population is becoming a greater and greater share of the whole.
Zoning reform can make a difference in housing stock. The county can impact zoning in the unincorporated segments of the county, but municipalities have the biggest impact. The county has provided funding in the past for neighborhood renewal, and I think that could hold some promise.
To help rejuvenate our demographics with young families, we need to make it more attractive for our college and technical school graduates to stay here after they have completed their education. Affordable housing would be a huge part of that. We also need to invest in the natural recreation and cultural resources that make a community attractive for young families.
