I am running for Supervisor for the Town of Wilson because I care about our Town and want to give back to the community that welcomed me with open arms. The residents of the Town of Wilson deserve leadership that listens and makes decisions based on facts and serving the residents. I have a strong work ethic, am not afraid to ask tough questions, and want to make sure that decisions are made carefully with careful consideration to long-term impacts. The Town of Wilson has a unique character, and I want to ensure that all residents have a voice.
The major goals that I hope to accomplish while in office pertain to annexation to the City of Sheboygan, the maintenance of a stable tax base and land use and development.
Annexation pressure from the City of Sheboygan continues to vex the Town of Wilson. The recent acquisition of 78 acres of land within the Town by the City of Sheboygan is just one example of the challenge faced by the Town of Wilson. Annexation reduces the tax base for the Town which directly impacts all of us, and threatens our ability to remain a strong, independent community. We need proactive measures to prevent further annexation. These could include the evaluation of strategic land purchases to prevent further annexation. When town lands leave due to annexation, the increased tax burden fall upon remaining taxpayers. Decisions about our land should remain in the hands of our residents. Strengthening our planning efforts through the updating of the Comprehensive Plan for the Town of Wilson is imperative.
The Town of Wilson provides easy access to the Highway 43 corridor. Thoughtful development along the Highway 43 corridor can strengthen the Town of Wilson's tax base and help preserve our independence. However, this development must be planned carefully to protect neighborhoods, natural resources and the character of the Town of Wilson. This includes wetland and groundwater preservation. Growth should focus on development that strengthens our tax base and creates jobs while protecting farmland and residential neighborhoods. Data Centers and logistics do not. I am opposed to land development that centers on data and logistics centers.
The position of Supervisor for the Town of Wilson requires review of contracts, budgets, ordinances and property development. My background has prepared me to pay close attention to detail, analyze complex information, and ask thoughtful questions. I have served for over 40 years as an educator in the State of Wisconsin, both at the High School and Higher Education levels. I have held positions as a past president of a unique HOA, past board member of Berry House (a halfway house for individuals leaving institutional living and transitioning to independent living), Team Lead and Program Chair at the technical college level. Serving as a Town Supervisor involves following a myriad of procedures ... I like procedures!
I have had the opportunity in my professional career to prepare lengthy accreditation documents and am not afraid of hard work. I have served as a student advocate for years and hope to continue that service as a taxpayer advocate for the residents of the Town of Wilson. I spent a handful of weeks in Haiti following the Earthquake of 2010 as a volunteer and will never regret the time I spent working with a group of service-centered folks. A number of the projects that we initiated are still active in Haiti. If elected, I will also happily attend State of Wisconsin educational sessions to better equip me for this position as Supervisor.
Ensuring that property development in the Town of Wilson is compatible with the needs and interests of Town residents will start with open communication. The Town will be revising the Comprehensive Plan over the next year, and this project will provide a 20 year plan for land-use decisions. This plan will drive important decisions such as land use and zoning, maintaining a rural and residential character, managing annexation pressures, and maintaining natural resources. The development of this Comprehensive Plan will require the expertise of many of the Town residents. These include residents who have valuable experience in engineering, environmental science, agriculture and business. The inclusion of these experts will provide the necessary resources to move the Town of Wilson forward over the next 20 years.
