In Indiana, the Office of the Township Trustee is primarily responsible for administering Township Assistance (formerly known as Poor Relief) which provides short-term financial assistance to low-income residents for essential needs such as utilities (water, electricity, propane, etc.), rent or mortgage payments, medical visits and prescription medications, food, and burial/cremation services. The Trustee also provides referrals to local, state, and federal agencies and programs that can offer both short- and long-term support with essentials. In addition to administering Township Assistance, the Trustee is responsible for addressing vegetation complaints, serving as a fence viewer, and providing notary services to the public at no charge.
I first became interested in township government in 2010 when allegations arose against the trustee at the time involving nepotism and overspending—allegations that later resulted in charges of official misconduct and theft. Wanting to stand up for taxpayers and be part of the solution led me to become involved, and I was caucused into this position in 2012. Along this journey, I have met some amazing people and local organizations, and have worked with the board on various projects to improve our community. Serving in this role has been a privilege, and I’m honored that voters have trusted me to continue this work, being re-elected three times. I remain committed to serving our community with integrity, transparency, and dedication.
While Benton Township is not as directly affected by federal and state budget cuts as some other local government entities, we are seeing more residents who need additional support as a result. My priority is to ensure we carefully review each application to identify additional services residents may qualify for, such as Energy Assistance or SNAP (Food Stamps). It’s also important that our office stays up to date on available programs so we can connect residents with as many resources as possible. We’ve also seen a wonderful tradition of neighbors helping neighbors during challenging times, and connecting volunteers and community resources with residents who need them most can make a meaningful difference without using taxpayer funds.
In the event of a disaster, my priority would be connecting with as many affected residents as possible to understand their most urgent needs—such as food, medication, or short-term housing—and helping meet those needs in the immediate aftermath. I would also reach out to other Township Trustees and local government agencies to coordinate efforts and identify ways we can strengthen the services available to our residents. I would also assist in organizing support from community volunteers willing to donate time, funds, or materials. Finally, I would help connect residents with organizations better equipped for long-term recovery, such as Monroe County Emergency Management and the American Red Cross, and assist with follow-up as needed.
