Weatherby Lake is a 'bedroom' community; meaning we have no commercial businesses with any tax revenue to contribute to the city finances. On the April 7th ballot there is Proposition 1, that the voters are asked to be increased in the amount of 33.04 cents ($0.3304) on the one-hundred-dollar valuation. This is needed to fund the operations of the city, including Public Works, the Police Department and office staff among many other things. The salaries we pay have to remain competitive with the communities around us and every year that becomes increasingly more difficult.

On the same ballot is also a Proposition to impose a 1% city sales tax for automobile and other titled purchases.

As a Weatherby Lake resident for most of my life, I take great pride of our city. My civic commitments as a volunteer for the Weatherby Lake Improvement Company and my time as an elected official have been very gratifying. During my decades here generations of families have become my friends and have provided the encouragement to continue. There are always needs for funding projects and it's the job of the city to figure out how to do that. Since revenue streams are reduced, the Alderpersons and I have put two Propositions on the ballot. It's our hope that they are approved to retain our city staff and build our dwindling reserves. I was approached by KCMO to partner with the traffic signal on Barry Road and Eastside Drive and with my encouragement a majority of the Alderpersons agreed. During my nearly 4 decade airline career, I quickly learned that it's always advantageous to anticipate the unexpected. The ability to do this over the years has served me and our community well.
