Occupation U.S. Representative
As a daughter of rural New Mexico, I take our diverse voices to the halls of Congress. Even before serving, I built businesses & won legal battles for voting rights, tribal sovereignty & health care. As your Congresswoman, I’ve delivered huge bipartisan wins: $100,000 for each eligible downwinder, uranium miner, or their survivors; over a $1 billion in water funding for acequias, farmers and the Eastern counties & Navajo/ Gallup pipelines; and $5.45 billion for the HPCC fire victims. I’m protecting public lands & water at Chaco Canyon & in the Pecos Watershed. As Chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus & on the powerful Rules Committee, I’ve fought Trump on health care cuts, tariffs, war & the attack on our sense of shared humanity.
My work always begins by listening to your stories of injustice and tragedy; pain and possibility. The powerful stories of New Mexicans is how I won bipartisan support for the most important laws and funding I’ve brought home. As a cancer survivor and sister of brothers lost to overdose, I share my own experiences about improving health care and addressing mental health and addiction. We must lower what it costs to live and this means taking on the corporate billionaires who gut worker pay and benefits. We must reverse the Republican tax breaks for billionaires so we can pay for what regular folks need. I will expand my Home of Your Own Act pilot project because a house you can afford is where you start building your American dream.
I believe Social Security is a sacred trust and the foundation of retirement security for our families and those disabled. To sustain it, I am a cosponsor of Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust Act, which would make the wealthy pay social security tax on their income above $400,000. This fair share tax will allow us to increase benefits and provide solvency to the Fund into the next century. I oppose Republican proposals to reduce guaranteed benefits, raise the retirement age, or replace Social Security with risky individual investment accounts. I’ve opposed Trump’s cuts to staff at Social Security and the DOGE release of your private social security data. I will fight to keep Social Security strong - a Democratic legacy of the New Deal.
We must fix our broken immigration system with a balanced, humane approach. I support a roadmap to citizenship for those who work hard and play by the rules, including Dreamers and farmworkers. We must provide visas and recognize the important role immigrants play in our health and care economy and other key industries in New Mexico. Simultaneously, I support cost-effective border security using advanced technology and funding for border patrol to detect cartel activity and illegal drugs like fentanyl. I’ve opposed the cruelty and brutality of the ICE and CBP raids, the arrests and killing of citizens and the mistreatment of people in detention centers, especially pregnant women and children. I oppose family separation.
Environmental health is non-negotiable for our survival & our economy. Keeping our fragile landscape healthy feeds our sense of awe & wonder in these beautiful lands. I delivered over $1 billion to keep clean water flowing in New Mexico & am sponsoring 7 water settlement bills. I funded cleaning up abandoned oil & gas wells & the contamination plumes at LANL & Canon. The clean up also creates good paying union jobs & supports businesses. I’ve funded renewable energy projects that, sadly, Trump gutted, but Democrats will bring back because it's the cheapest electricity at a time when everything costs so much. Doing good by our planet also helps our pocketbook. I will reinstate & improve the clean air & water programs Trump destroyed.
Healthcare is a basic human right, but big insurers and private equity profits means we pay more, wait more and get less health care here. I understand the urgency of making care affordable and accessible everywhere, especially in rural areas. Congress must: Lower Drug Costs. We must build on the Inflation Reduction Act to negotiate lower drug prices for everyone and cap out-of-pocket costs. Expand and Improve Medicare. Moving toward a single-payer system like Medicare for All will save money and expand benefits to include dental, vision, and hearing coverage. Protect Access. We must codify reproductive rights through the Women’s Health Protection Act and defend the Affordable Care Act & Medicaid against Republican bills to eliminate them.
