I have 28 years of experience with the sheriffs office. I worked in corrections, law enforcement and courthouse administration. I have investigated many crimes such as domestic violence, theft, identity theft, burglaries, and participated in crisis intervention. While I was in corrections I was team leader for the emergency response team where we handled a wide variety of emergencies and situations.
After knocking on doors and talking to members of the community, the top three issues right now in our county is ICE, mental health, and trust with law enforcement. ICE. Know your rights and report documentation of ICE incidents to the sheriff’s office so that we can create a database and evidence for future prosecution of violation of people’s civil rights. Mental Health. I want to work closely with our county board and our new Crisis Recovery Center to ensure people have easy access of care regarding substance abuse or any other aid they might need. Trust with Law Enforcement. Host more events with our community that strengthens the bond between law enforcement and the public.
As sheriff, I will be recruiting through community policing and working with both unions at our department to hire more officers and to strengthen our benefit package.
Under my command, the sheriff’s office will be front and center on supporting women experiencing domestic violence and sexual assault. The sheriffs office will be educating the public on Karina’s Law going forward. The sheriffs office will also be working closely with the states attorney’s office to make sure these crimes are investigated to it’s fullest and that justice is received for the victims.
Under my command, the sheriff’s office will enforce the laws currently on the books regarding assault weapons. Why? Because it is the law in Illinois. Also Karina’s Law will be strictly enforced. The sheriffs office doesn’t make the laws. We enforce them. This is why mental health needs to be taken seriously because people who commit mass shootings are not experiencing normal thought.

I have served with the DuPage County Sheriff's Office for over 30 years. In that time, I have been a detective sergeant, patrol sergeant, Chief of Administration, and currently serve as the Undersheriff overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Sheriff's Office and the 500+ personnel.
The first issue is recruitment of our Office personnel. This is a nationwide challenge and as such, we have stepped up our recruitment efforts. This has allowed us to hire over 30 new employees in the last 6 months. The second issue is budgetary constraints. The cost of law enforcement is ever increasing, but through strong relationships with the County Board and County staff, we collaborate and work through challenges.
I believe that we need to continue, and expand, the training programs for all staff, working to ensure that we meet state mandates, community concerns, and best practices in all areas of the Office. In addition, mental health concerns for first responders are a priority to me. We have enhanced our peer support program, working with an outside provider as needed, to support our staff.
The DuPage County Sheriff's Office needs to be a pillar of strength, support, and encouragement. I plan to extend our community outreach programs, partner with the DuPage County Domestic Advocates, and ensure that services are accessible, expedient, and that the reports are treated and investigated with the highest priority.
I believe law enforcement and military should have access to assault weapons, but I also think that the law-abiding citizens should be allowed ownership with proper regulation. Requiring a FOID card, background checks, training, and conceal and carry permits ensuring safety while respecting individual's rights.

I have over 23 years of law enforcement experience (still active). I served in several positions throughout my career including Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, School Resource Officer, Detective, Use of Force Instructor, Officer in Charge (over 900 hours) and Patrol Sergeant. I had the opportunity to train, mentor and motivate several Officers throughout my career. I was a DuPage County Board Member for 8 years approving budgets including the Sheriff's budget. I was appointed to several committees while on the County Board and was Chairman of the Emergency Telephone Systems Board that oversees the dispatch centers. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Social Justice and a Master's Degree in Public Safety Administration.
While Public Safety is my highest priority, staffing is critical. Recently, there was a fight in the courthouse that resulted in 3 Deputies being hospitalized and staffing was a major factor. This is a safety concern not only for the Deputies, but the Public and Judges. Recruiting and retention is a major issue. Leadership failures have resulted in negative headlines at the Sheriff's Office. 11 million dollar law suit for a death in the jail. Corrections Deputy sexually assaulting a female inmate. Other issues/needs: implement a drug unit to fight the opioid crisis, improve response times, when they are short man power, response times are longer. Increasing patrols in vulnerable areas and strengthening community-Police relations.
I will advocate for additional man power. We can't provide the services if we don't have the bodies in place. I want to hire the best and keep the best. Improving the morale with accountable leaders will draw more qualified recruits. The salaries also need to be competitive with our municipal partners. Continued training is critical. The Sheriff's Office has an obligation to serve and protect and to maintain the jail. The Sheriff's Office has several divisions that make it an attractive career choice. Making sure the equipment is up to date and maintained and to equip the Deputies with the tools they need to safely and effectively do their jobs.
The Sheriff's Office should always advocate for women experiencing domestic abuse and sexual assault. Counselors, social workers and advocacy center placement can provide comfort and relief post trauma and any assistance or service we can provide to help them in their recovery will be made available.
I strongly support the 2nd Amendment and recognize it's the handler who is responsible for how he or she uses their weapon. It's more important to identify people who shouldn't be in possession of these weapons whether it's a mental health matter or their criminal history. The Constitution allows us to bear arms and I took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States, the State of Illinois and the policies of my respective municipality. It takes one firearm with one bullet to cause a casualty.
