Seventeen Commissioners elected by district constitute the Cook County Board, the governing policy board and legislative body of Cook County. The Board is responsible for setting policy and laws for the County regarding the functions of the County, including public health and public safety; approving contracts over a certain minimum dollar amount; and approving appointments to various unelected offices, boards and commissions. The Board approves the annual County budget and oversees the financial integrity of the County. The Cook County Commissioners also serve as the members of the Cook County Forest Preserve District Board.
