In essence, a Member of Congress acts as a lawmaker, advocate, problem-solver, and public servant, balancing the complex demands of federal governance with the specific needs of their home district. Key Duties & Responsibilities:Legislative:Draft, introduce, debate, and vote on bills. Serve on committees to specialize in policy areas and oversee specific government functions. Fund government programs and agencies. Representation & Communication:Advocate for their district's interests in Washington D.C. Educate constituents on issues and legislation. Meet with local officials, businesses, and citizens. Constituent Service (Casework):Help constituents navigate federal agencies (IRS, VA, Social Security, etc.). Address individual problems and concerns. Oversight & Investigation:Ensure laws are administered as Congress intended. Hold hearings and conduct investigations into executive actions. Political & Electoral:Engage in fundraising and campaigning for re-election. Participate in party leadership and strategy. Institutional:Manage their congressional office and staff.
