I am running for Town Clerk because I want to help. Throughout my life, I've seen too many examples of bad governance, be it mismanaged funds, underhanded dealings, or just a general feeling of stagnation and gridlock. While a town clerk can't "change" all that, what I can do is get you in touch with the right people. In many ways, my job is a switchboard operator. Anyone who has had extended chats with me about this position has heard this ramble, but in the past 10 years, there has been so much changeover. Staff, officials, procedure, policy, so much has changed, and a lot of it without adequate back up or procedure. As Town Clerk, I've begun writing procedural manuals for many of our functions. While it may not seem like much, creating those operational standards is integral to making sure that things run smoothly.
As the current town clerk, I've spent the past year learning as much as possible. As my predecesor would say, it's like drinking from a fire hose. That said, I'm proud to say that I come in to the office every day and do my best to help my community.
Communication is a big one. We have people in our Town that don't have internet or reliable phone access. There's also not a lot of access to public transit.
Increasing public transit! We have an aging community that needs access to rides. I would love to see the Town sponsor or at least endorse a ride-share group. My office has recently started selling TCAT bus tickets as part of this initiative. I also helped the Town Board create the framework for the community forums. I also accept off/after-hours appointments, that way people can have access to services when they need them. Most emails we receive are answered within a day.
The position of town clerk is a real catch-all of sorts, but at the end of the day, it's a position that is here to support you.
