I bring over 20 years of leadership experience in business and technology, currently serving as Chief Information Officer for a company with over 8,000 employees. In that role I manage large budgets, lead complex projects, and build collaborative solutions; skills directly transferable to city governance. I’ve also been a small business owner in Billings and understand the challenges local families and employers face. My background has taught me to listen, solve problems with common sense, and work across perspectives to get results that strengthen our community.
I see the role of a council member as one of collaboration and accountability. The City Council sets policy and direction, while the city manager and department heads are responsible for day-to-day operations. My job is to listen to the public, represent their priorities, and ensure that policies reflect community needs. I believe in working respectfully with fellow council members, even when we disagree, and maintaining open communication with staff and residents to build trust and transparency in city government.
Growth brings both opportunity and responsibility. As a council member, I would work to ensure we welcome new businesses and residents while protecting what makes Billings unique. That means supporting smart housing policies, strong infrastructure planning, and thoughtful zoning that balances development with livability. By listening to residents and working with developers, we can guide growth in a way that strengthens our economy while maintaining the character and identity of our city.
I believe the shortage of funding for our city parks is a serious problem because these spaces are essential to quality of life in Billings. Before we add new parks, we need a plan to maintain the ones we already have. Solutions include restoring local authority to create a Park Maintenance District, exploring development-linked fees to ensure new subdivisions help cover long-term upkeep, and expanding public-private partnerships and philanthropy for specific projects. We must prioritize sustainable funding so our parks remain safe, accessible, and well cared for.
Recent legislative changes have created a budget shortfall of more than $6 million for Billings. This affects how we provide core services such as police, fire, and street maintenance, and it puts pressure on quality-of-life services like parks and libraries. Unfortunately there is no quick or easy fix. My approach is to focus first on efficiency and smart budgeting to stretch every dollar. At the same time, I will advocate for restoring local authority so Billings can respond more flexibly when the state reduces revenue. I am also open to new revenue sources, including targeted funding tools and partnerships, as long as they are transparent, fair, and tied directly to community needs.
