Education Vanderbilt University, B. A., Case Western Reserve School of Law, J.D.
Training & Experience I practiced law for many years, and gained public service experience as State Representative for most of Portage County, in the Governor's Cabinet as Director of the Department of Insurance, and locally as an at-large Aurora Council member. I have served as Mayor for almost 12 years.
Volunteer & Community Service Currently I chair the Kent State Board of Trustees, I am a trustee of the National First Ladies Library, and I am a trustee of the Ohio Tuition Trust Authority.
Aurora is governed by a Charter which states that the Mayor is “the chief executive, operating, and administrative officer” in the city and chief conservator of the peace. I work with Council on the adoption of measures including an annual budget to keep the city operating and to implement long-range plans for the city. I appoint all department heads, with Council confirmation, and appoint all board and commission members. During my tenure the city has won awards for fiscal accountability, and we have not increased taxes. We are also a safe city and have been recognized as such in the Plain Dealer. We have installed more than 3 miles of sidewalks; replaced 4 century-old waterlines; implemented stormwater management measures; opened 3 new parks; and preserved more than 250 acres of greenspace, including the former SeaWorld where we are building a new public park. We also opened the first leg of a beautiful hike and bike trail along an abandoned railroad corridor.
