The most pressing issue facing our township, in my opinion, is safety. This encompasses ensuring timely and effective plowing and salting of our roads during winter, maintaining our roadways in spring through chip sealing or paving as necessary, and guaranteeing the presence of all requisite signage on our roadways. Furthermore, it is essential that all township buildings are ADA compliant and up to date regarding state building, health, and fire codes.
One of the challenges facing Mantua Township is a lack of water supply for fire protection to the business district within the Township. With anticipated future growth in the Township, the existing infrastructure in Mantua Township, including State Route 44 and 82 and Timber Point Trail, is inadequate. I propose collaborating with the Portage County Board of Commissioners, Portage County Water Resources, and Portage County Engineers to pursue grant funding from the state of Ohio or federal grants to provide water supply to the Mantua Corners area at no cost to Mantua Township. Supporting infrastructure development is a concern for townships due to the new agricultural developments, tourism and new developments emerging at a rapid pace.
Potential budget culture is a concern for townships across Ohio as declining operational funding is always a concern for these entities. Currently, they continue to rely on grant funding to offset the loss of revenue. Furthermore, to maintain fiscal responsibility and prudent spending, the township would need to pursue additional grants for operational expenses, paving projects, building repair and maintenance and cemetery needs. Many townships will need to engage in group purchasing by bulk material, such as salt, gravel, culvert pipes.
