One of the first things that must be done is to search for a new superintendent. We must look until we find an educational leader that has a vision which aligns with our district’s mission statement. We need an individual who is a strong leader, who works collaboratively with principals, who supports teachers and staff as they work to do what’s best for our students, and who knows our children are more than test scores. Another issue that we need to continue to tackle is district finances. We need to find ways to balance our budget without sacrificing the quality education our students deserve. We need to look for ways to find additional funding through federal and state grants.
Although I retired last year, I was an educator for forty years - 37 of those years in the Federal Hocking Middle and High Schools. My husband, Bill, taught for 20 years at the middle school, and our daughter, Chelsea, is a proud graduate of the Federal Hocking School District. In addition, both my parents, William and Elizabeth Elmore, also taught for and retired from this school district. So this school district means a great deal to my family and to me. I believe I bring both parent and teacher perspectives to the table, and I am dedicated to seeing our wonderful school district move forward in a positive direction once again.
I believe the role of the school board is to ensure the superintendent is making sound decisions based on our district’s mission statement. A superintendent must listen to the concerns of parents, provide positive leadership for administration, find ways to meet the needs of staff and faculty, and make decisions that look to the future of our children. It is the responsibility of the school board to not only make certain the superintendent fulfills his/her responsibilities, but to also ensure transparency of the decision making process.

The board should work closely with the Superintendent and be informed of decisions being made. You hire the superintendent to run the district.
