Qualifications for Office
I am in my first term as Plain Township Trustee and second year as Chair of the Board. I have lived in the community since 2010 and I am a small business owner. I have deep experience in strategic planning, fundraising, board governance, and training for nonprofit organizations and I bring those communication and business skills to my public service.
Building our second fire station as quickly and as cost effectively as possible is critical. The project has been delayed and our community needs this station for reduced response times. Fully executing on our fire department strategic plan is of utmost importance for the health and safety of our community.
I am proud to have worked closely with fire department and township leadership on the fire levy campaign last year. Passage of the levy was significant and was necessary for construction of the second station. I am also committed to expanding burial options in our cemetery so that those who choose cremation have ways to be interred and honored. Determining how those cemetery changes will be financed is the next step, but the fire levy and fire station development have taken precedence. Lastly, I have been committed to improving communication with our residents. I'm pleased to have played a leadership role in the fire department strategic plan, annual report, and in supporting increased social media capacity for the township.
Adding the second fire station is needed based on today's population and will be even more critical as the population grows. In fact, I believe we should identify a location for a future third fire station. While that may be many years away, securing that location now will be prudent. Our community pool is more than 20 years old and may not be large enough to meet the needs of our growing community. Thinking strategically about the future of the aquatic center is needed for recreation and summer fun but also life safety as swim lessons are very important to offer. Lastly, we are reviewing our land use plan given the demand for housing, but those options in the township are limited by zoning and water/sewer connections.
I maintain a Facebook account for my role as township trustee, separate from my personal and campaign accounts. I attend community events, joint parks district meetings, community foundation meetings, and county township meetings, among other activities to keep lines of communication open with stakeholders and voters. As a candidate, I am talking to neighbors often. I listen to residents when they attend our meetings, and I take their concerns seriously.
I believe local government works best when done in collaboration with others. I do not believe that township decisions should be made in isolation. We must work in close relationship with the city and school district, and with private sector and civic leaders. As our new fire department mission statement says - together, we save lives. I approach my work with this spirit of collaboration and and believe that serves our residents and tax payers well. I am running with Hans Schell, who has been deeply engaged in the community for more than 25 years. Together, we will strengthen connections and relationships with partners.
