In the upcoming term, the district will be finishing the referendum work. I have served on the board for the past three years as a member of the Finance and Facilities committee who is tasked with overseeing the referendum. This process has been such a rewarding and challenge endeavor. I am excited to see this through.
We also need to devise a long term solution to our bus garage. The current location is leased for a three year term. We are considering a variety of options for a permanent bus garage and will continue to explore and determine which solution will best serve the town.
One of the most important responsibilities the board undertakes is hiring a the superintendent. Our current superintendent's contract expired next year. She has not announced her intentions to either renew her contract or retire. If she retires, the next board will be hiring her replacement. We need to find someone who will move our district forward. Having members on the board who have experience and understand what the superintendent actually does is imperative in making the best selection for our district.
As an attorney, I use critical thinking in all aspects of my job. I have applied this mindset to every board decision I have made over the past three years serving and will continue to do so. The board members need to work together, debate ideas thoughtfully and respectfully and compromise when appropriate. The current board acts in such a manner. I will maintain that level of professionalism as I continue to serve on the board.
When I joined the board in 2023, I really had no idea what the board's job entailed. I have worked diligently over the past three years to learn. We attend mandatory board education and ethics classes. Furthermore, I attended the state wide school board convention's education law class. Education law is not my personal field of expertise so this added training was highly valuable. Three years of education and training will allow me to do a far more effective job this term knowing what is required and expected of a board member.
There is a protocol that must be adhered to when confronted with a parent concern. The board member can listen but then ethically and under the state wide board rules, must refer the parent to first the teacher, then the student's school administration. If the concern is a district wide issue, then the office of the superintendent should be contacted via email or phone call to respond to the parent's concerns. An individual board member cannot directly seek to solve a parent concern. Neither can an individual board member speak on behalf of the board, only the President may speak for the board as a whole. While I may not be able to comment directly, I will always listen and take these concerns to the administration and my fellow board members as I have done since joining the board in January 2023.
