Biographical Information
Is there a particular issue, or a specific reason, that has motivated you to seek a position on the board of education? Explain why you are running.
What experiences or skills have prepared you to serve as a board member?
How do you propose to balance the following factors: retention of good teachers, quality of education provided to the students, and the desire of most taxpayers for lower taxes.
What, if any, changes would you like to make to the school district curriculum?
I'm seeking a position on the Morris School District Board of Education because I believe in the power of public education. Public education builds strong foundations and transforms young lives. I want to be part of the team that makes that possible. I’m dedicated to helping ensure that the Morris School District is providing students with the best education possible.
My elementary- and preschool-age daughters are students in the District so I also have a parents perspective. I’ve been engaged through the Home and School Association, serving as Treasurer for nearly 4 years and have seen firsthand how vital parent and community involvement is towards building an enriching school environment. My hope is to broaden my ability to have a positive impact and continue to support students at the Board of Education level.
I have a proven record of collaboration and relationship building, and successful project management through both my career and my volunteer work. I served on the Board of Directors for the Junior League of Morristown for many years - holding a variety of positions including President, Finance, Strategic Plan, and Communications. As a career civil servant in the environmental field, I’ve learned to be adaptable through times of intense change while remaining focused on the core mission. I am skilled in leading well-organized teams, communicating complex issues to a variety of stakeholders, and achieving shared goals. I’ll bring that same energy and passion to the Board of Education.
Retaining talented teachers, providing a quality education and limiting the cost to taxpayers is a balancing act. I think the best way to achieve that balance is through thoughtful spending. Each line item should be carefully considered and the cost-benefit ratio examined, while remaining focused on the primary mission of empowering each student to ascend academically, socially, and emotionally.
I think it’s vital to offer a broad array of classes and experiences to students so that they can build a variety of skills, learn different perspectives, and identify where their interests lie. I also think that life skills are often inadvertently pushed to the background. Many young adults face a steep learning curve in financial literacy, leases and contracts, civics, and other aspects of independent adult life. As a Morris School District Board of Education member, I’d look for opportunities to help ensure students develop these competencies.
