Biography My name is Dan Summerell. I’m running for Sheriff of Suffolk. My wife and I built our home here 23 years ago, and our daughter graduated from the Suffolk public school system. Suffolk is more than just a city to us, it’s home. After nearly 26 years of experience in law enforcement, I’m ready to give back to the community we love. A little about me: • Retired from the Virginia Air National Guard in 2015 after 3 combat tours and 88 missions outside the wire. • I am currently serving as a Sergeant with the Veterans Affairs Police in Hampton, VA. • Former Special Agent with the Office of Personnel Management's Federal Investigative Service. • Lieutenant with the Department of Defense Police. • Retired in April 2024 after 24 years of service i
One of the greatest challenges I hope to manage is strengthening community trust while addressing rising concerns about public safety. I will focus on improving transparency, increasing community engagement, and ensuring our deputies are well-trained and equipped to serve with integrity and accountability.
I believe I am the best candidate because I bring proven leadership, a deep commitment to the Suffolk community, and a clear vision for a safer, more transparent Sheriff's Office. I’m dedicated to building trust, enhancing public safety, and ensuring that every citizen is treated with fairness and respect.
What I like most about living in Suffolk is the strong sense of community and connection among our residents. Suffolk is a place where people truly care about one another, and that neighborly spirit is felt in our city from our rural areas to our growing neighborhoods. I also appreciate our rich history, the beauty of our natural surroundings, and the pride our citizens take in making Suffolk a great place to live and raise a family. It’s that sense of unity and shared purpose that inspires me to serve.
