The King William Board needs to get a handle on the county budget. The revolving door of county administrators and county finance directors has left the county in a bad position to understand its budget numbers on the income side making it very difficult to determine the best course of action on how much the county has for necessary programs. A part of the problem with the county budget stems from personnel issues created by the current board and a part concerns the ability of the current board to get ahead of the problems in the finance office. The finance issues coupled with the decision to pull the county out of the regional library system without a good plan for providing better service to the citizens has led to a loss of trust.
I have three decades of management experience within the federal government and in private educational institutions. My management experience will hep me in evaluating good candidates for the many open positions in the county and it creating an environment that will result in long term retention. My experience as an educator will help me in evaluating the educational needs of our growing student population. My work on the Social Services Advisory Board and my work as an attorney representing low income taxpayers for the past two decades will help me work through the stress the recent legislation places on the county to assist individuals in need. My experience as a tax lawyer will help me understand budget numbers.
I enjoy the rural nature of the county. I live on a farm and although I am not a farmer, I enjoy the benefits of watching the crops grow and watching the seasons of the year surrounded by nature. King William County makes it easy to enjoy the natural beauty all around us. The county consists of "regular" people who can perform a hosts of tasks. As someone with limited mechanical skills, I marvel at my neighbor's abilities to fix almost anything and figure out how to make things work. There are enough groups available to join to allow me to connect with neighbors while at the same time enough space to allow me not to feel hemmed in by others.
