experience
41 years of listening to people's problems and helping them find answers as a Family Medicine Physician ; Member Prince George County Board of Supervisors 2002 - 2007; Chairman 2005, 2006, 2007
I want Gloucester County to be the best place to live, learn, work and raise a family. While most of the citizens want to "preserve the rural character" of our County - we have an obligation to provide housing alternatives to the citizens. One of my goals to to have balanced and thoughtful growth. We already have an "urban" area - that served by water and sewer and a rural area (outside that urban area) . While some in my political party want to weaken our public school education - I am the opposite. A product of public schools myself, we must resource the schools to educate our future. We must look for economic development opportunities consistent with our goals. Finally, we must balance all this against the taxes paid.
In medical school physicians learn that 80% of any diagnosis is in the patient's history (or story). We are taught how to listen to people and to hear their stories. I have been listening to people's stories for 41 years and either trying to solve them myself (when appropriate) or asking more questions (diagnostic tests) or referring them to the best person (or people) who can solve or address their problem. When I ran for public office in 2002 I brought those listening and hearing skills with me to my public service. If elected to the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors, I will again bring these skills with me to the public service of all the citizens of Gloucester County.
First, this is my home. My mother (Maria Atkins) was born on our family farm (now a Centennial Farm) Freewelcome Farm in Dutton. My family cemetery is at the Shackelford's Methodist Church. My wife and I actually live on a parcel of land that was once a part of our farm - sold off long ago to raise money. 2nd - I am now what some would call a "come back" - I practiced medicine in / or around Prince George County for the 1st part of my career and in 2013 decided to "come back home" and practice here in historic Gloucester Courthouse. It is the people who make the community and I / we simply love the people here. Finally, we have the best of waterfront, farm lands as well as some denser development with associated amenities to enjoy.
