Currently serving as an Interim Member, At-Large, Gloucester County School Board. Also served for 12 years on the Hampton City School Board, five years as Board Chairman
Like many of our traditional institutions, the reputation of public schools has tarnished somewhat in recent years. Strong school board governance can help to maintain — and rebuild as necessary — the public confidence necessary for a successful school system. Here’s a start :
1) Recognize and respect the primary and essential role of parents. We must insure transparency and parental involvement in all decisions affecting the health and welfare of every child.
2) Encourage and support the hard work of good classroom teachers, thereby assuring a highly motivated and qualified educator in every classroom.
3) Demand fiscal responsibility and accountability, assuring faithful stewardship of the taxpayer’s money.
My wife and I have four grown children, all of whom attended public schools, K-12.
Two of our grandchildren attend GCPS. With that, I bring a parent’s perspective to the Board.
I fully recognize and respect the primary and essential role of parents in the education of their children.
In addition, I served twelve years as a School Board Member in a neighboring division; five of those years as the Board Chairman.
With this experience in School Board governance, I am fully prepared to contribute to the continuous improvement of Gloucester County Public Schools.
Gloucester, VA is a semi-rural county with a small town sense of community . . . and I like that.
Residents are quick to support our local businesses and to root for the home team.
Parades and seasonal festivals are still very much in fashion here. A spirit of neighborliness prevails. And it’s a sentiment that permeates each of our eight public schools.
Growth in Gloucester County is evident, but measured. For now, a healthy balance of rural agrarian and non agricultural elements blend almost seamlessly. The result : a quality of life suited to retirees, as well as to families with young children. I am happy to be here.
