Both 1/2 cent Sales Taxes have allowed the City to repair and replace many roads in Topeka. Replacing water, storm sewer and sanitary sewer lines during road replacement is updating decades old infrastructure. All of this provides more reliable utilities, smoother and safer roads and safe water to drink. One item specific to District 9 is building a fire station. The response time to fires or health emergencies will be shortened. The plan is being developed now. The is a long hoped for safety project for the district. Adding more housing stock to the Topeka can help with a basic need of shelter. The RHID program, the Land Band, the Affordable Housing Trust Fund will also improve the number and variety of housing options.
As a small business owner, I have experience filing and paying sales tax, working with health and business insurance, contesting and paying property taxes for 4 properties, estimating and submitting prices for building project bids and working with utility companies resolving service issues like broken water mains. Member and Chair of the Planning Commission. I studied and voted on zoning cases, platting and subdivision cases neighborhood plans and health maps. All of those items come before the Governing Body on a regular basis. I am a Structural Engineer and project manager so I have technical expertise that helps me understand and explain some of the work the City undertakes to citizens. Listening and answering questions is essential
Local Government makes decisions that affect citizens with the most immediate impact. Changing a zoning can improve a neighborhood by adding a new business. A new subdivision can add to traffic but it can also add taxes to support a school district or the City. It can spread the tax base. Repairing or replacing a road can make every day commutes easier, move traffic faster, open an area to development. i work with citizens who do not know who to contact about a broken sewer inlet, for example and connect them to the right department. In some respects, I am a customer service agent who connects them to the right resource. Council members are a link between citizens, employees, businesses, government and nonprofit organizations.
