The Bernards Township Committee is comprised of five members, elected by the public for three-year terms of office on a staggered schedule, with one or two seats coming up for election each year. All members have equal power and may vote on all issues. Township Committee hold all legislative and executive powers of the Township (except in matters of health). At the annual Reorganization meeting held in January, the Mayor is elected by the committee from among its members.
Qualifications/Experience
Though I am a rookie in seeking political office, I have a lifetime of experience that I feel makes me qualified to run for Bernards Township Committee. My career was focused on projects that required problem identification and potential solutions, as a Project Executive. Consensus building was the differencevbetween a successful project and a unsuccessful project. Additionally, my volunteer work through my local church has further reinforced working within teams where progress is based on consensus building
Involvement in Community
I am active in my community in numerous ways, both historical and present. Historically, I have been the co-President of the Ridge High School Marching Band Parents Association. I also volunteered with Ridge High School's Forensics Team (Debate), co-managed two Destination Imagination Teams, participated in the YMCA's father-daughter program called Adventure Guides and have served in numerous roles at my local church. Presently, I volunteer, and serve on the board, for a local Food Pantry, co-manage my church's cemetery, as well as several other roles I hold within my church.
Slogan
Fiscal Responsibility, Forward - Thinking, Community Engagement, Solutions and Results
The major challenges that face our municipality are that of inaction. Many voters view local government offices such as Township Committee as being unimportant, and thus not deserving of attention. Bernards Township has amazing potential in its downtown area. With the right investment, Bernards Township can become more of a destination for people wanting to visit. Additionally, more people of years are looking for services that can help them age in place. Bernards Township has the means to add value add services that can help our entire community with walking paths, bike paths, and even a localized approach towards transportation options for those who may not drive for any number of various reasons.
As law enforcement agents, I believe that both ICE and municipal authorities have different roles to play in our communities. ICE is focused on immigration enforcement, which should be upheld in a manner that is consistent with local and national laws and carry as a default due process. Local authorities should be focused on the safety of our local residents regardless of documentation status. Local authorities need to rely on the trust that they build within our community, and as such should keep their role different and separate from ICE's role
Our community values the beauty of our surroundings, the quality of our school systems and the ease of access to services. To continue draw of persons to our Township, we must let the residents know that all persons and groups are important and included. This includes simple acts such as ensuring that all requests for Township services towards our non-profit community based groups are treated in an equal manner that is open to all. For the school system, there is little authority that the Township Committee has other than continually voicing our support for the continued strength of our schools. As local population ages, providing services that allow them as much flexibility and ability, to participate in their community. Services like transportation to local shops.
