South Coast Education Service District Director Position 7 at Large

The 19 education service districts in Oregon were created by the Legislature to oversee and support the school districts in their area. They provide supplemental services such as special education and coordinate services shared among several school districts. They also certify teachers, maintain school property, and are empowered to create new school districts.Qualifications: Candidate must be a registered voter and a resident of the district for at least 1 year. Employees of the district are not eligible. ORS 334.090(5), 334.090(6).Term: 4 years

I began serving on the SCESD Board in early 2022. Relevant skills/qualifications include : BS-Education WOSC Elementary classroom educator for the Falls City and Salem Keizer School districts Graduate student in administration OSU Language Arts for Educators instructor &student teacher supervisor/field liason OSU MA- Organizational Leadership WOU Certifications-Executive Leadership & Operational Leadership WOU Community involvement: Past President, The Empire Coalition, SCESD Board pos.#7, CASA volunteer, Citizen's Review Board (CRB) board member, League of Women Voters , Small Business Development Center Adv. committee,Operation Homefront coordinator,former Falls City Mayor, Nat'l Guard Family Support Coordinator (Salem 167 Engineers)
Our ESD provides support for our 10 school districts of Coos, Curry and western Douglas counties, and helps to fill in the gaps by providing goods and services that school districts need but are unable to offer individually. SCESD provides services for learners from birth to age 21 through a variety of programs/ services including early intervention,special education and family support. In addition, SCESD provides districts with technology, administrative, and staff support. I believe that each of our programs and services are equally important and vital to enhance the shared goals of providing equitable and quality educational experiences for all learners; they thereby strengthen our community as a whole and we all benefit.
Technology is evolving quickly in today's world, and ESDs can better serve districts by ensuring that they stay current with the latest advances. I believe that we must recognize that ESDs are not stagnant. They are ever evolving and flexible entities that must listen to the needs of the districts they serve and offer programs and services to enhance and maximize student learning. Understanding the specific needs of the districts and tailoring programs and services to meet those needs is vital. Oregon's (now)19 ESDs were formed in 1961 to provide school districts with services and programs that are too costly for a single location. This moderates costs for districts and still ensures equitable educational opportunities for all learners.
