Special districts in Oregon are formed to provide specific local government needs. They are created by a vote of the people in the local area being served. Examples include people’s utility districts, library districts, water districts, fire protection districts, and more. They are governed by a board of directors, which is responsible for management and financial accountability. Special districts are empowered to levy any necessary taxes and fees to fulfill their mandate. Board members are not paid but may receive a per diem reimbursement.Port District boards manage the infrastructure of local ports and their development for recreational, economic, and environmental purposes.Qualifications: Candidate must be a registered voter in the district. I have 16 years experience on the Port of Bandon. Most of those years I have represented the Port of Bandon in Washington DC along with the Pacific Northwest Waterways Association. In DC I have successfully lobbied for things like dredging and the upcoming $50 million in jetty repairs. As a commercial fisherman I have a unique perspective to bring to relations with both state and federal elected officials and staffs. As the principal of our family business I can relate to the small businesses that the Port has leases with. As a member and chairman of the Oregon Albacore Commission I have nearly 20 years of experience managing Oregon Department of Agriculture reviewed budgets as well as following Statutory requirements and guidelines.
I want to help facilitate the completion of the new Port Offices building and the $50 million jetty repair. The Office building should be completed in 2025 and the to be completed in about 2028-29 I successfully lobbied for Oregon State funds for the new building and I'd like to see that through to completion. I have also successfully lobbied for and I hope to see that through to completion as well.
I would place the needs of the Ports recreational users as our top priority. In a recent study it was found that the Port of Bandon's access to the sea, enabled by Army Corp of Engineers dredging, annually produces approximately sixty-three million dollars in direct revenue to the community, resulting in approximately 5 million in federal tax revenue. This is in exchange for around $500,000/year of Army Corp of engineers dredging! I see this as an excellent return on investment by the federal project that is the Coquille River entrance jetty system. Of course we are always on the lookout for industrial and commercial fishing operations opportunities but recreational revenue remains our top priority.

We have a new marina, a new parking lot, we’re in the process of completing new port offices, bathrooms and showers. My priorities are to focus on maintenance of port properties including lessee’s of port buildings, bathrooms & the crab docks along with beautification regarding our boardwalk, amphitheater plus I have a few ideas and future projects racing around in my head.
