I have strong roots in this community—as a former student and now as a parent of a student in the North Bend School District. After graduating from college and starting my career as a lawyer, I chose to return to North Bend to raise my kids. I’m passionate about helping kids, and most of my volunteer work has centered around this commitment. In the past, I’ve volunteered with SMART (Start Making A Reader Today), the Imprint program (where I was paired with middle school students to read an assigned book and correspond as pen pals), and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). More recently, I served as a core member of the NB School District’s strategic planning team. I’m also in my 4th season of coaching my son's grade school soccer team.
It is my understanding that the District is required to comply with state education policies, and that failure to comply with federal education policies could result in a loss of federal funding.
Less than half of our students are meeting grade-appropriate benchmarks in reading and math. My top priority is to dramatically increase the number of kids meeting these benchmarks by utilizing quality tutoring, instructional coaches, and other research-supported practices. I would also work to increase student attendance numbers by increasing parent outreach and communication.
