I have been a member of the Vernonia School Board since 2013, first appointed to fill a vacancy and then elected three times since. I was a member of the Monument Charter School Board for 5 years from 1999 to 2004. I bring a wide range of experience working for Community Action Team serving those most in need throughout Columbia, Clatsop and Tillamook counties, a small business owner, paralegal, and special education aide.
School districts like ours have always been required to follow state and federal laws that protect students from discrimination. This includes following the Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA) Policy AC: Nondiscrimination and Civil Rights, which the Vernonia School Board recently updated. This policy ensures that VSD provides equal opportunities for ALL students, regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or religion.
As a school board member, we must look at all the issues facing the district. Our District, as with all rural school districts, face limits on funding. Having a secure and appropriate level of funding allows our district to provide opportunities for all of our students to become their best selves and successful in whatever future path they choose to follow.
