Special districts in Oregon are formed to provide specific local government needs. They are created by a vote of the people in the local area being served. Examples include people’s utility districts, library districts, water districts, fire protection districts, and more. They are governed by a board of directors, which is responsible for management and financial accountability. Special districts are empowered to levy any necessary taxes and fees to fulfill their mandate. Board members are not paid but may receive a per diem reimbursement.The 267 fire protection districts in Oregon can have different structures and mandates, but all are responsible for funding and staffing fire prevention and safety services, and for managing the budgets of local fire stations.Qualifications: Candidate must be a registered voter or a landowner in the district. If the district has a supporting ordinance, employees of the district are not eligible. ORS 478.050Term: 4 years

Water Quality Specialist for the Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District

As an employee of the Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District (2021 - present), I have attended and recorded minutes for many monthly board meetings and am familiar with the operations of our board and the expectations of each of the directors. Additionally, my role at the Lincoln SWCD has included many fire prevention and safety trainings, including wildfire community preparedness.
Additionally, as a citizen of Siletz, I have familiarized myself with the city's Local Emergency Management guides and feel prepared to serve in a board director position with the knowledge of what the Fire Protection District's specific role will be in the event of a variety of emergencies.
To provide Emergency Medical Services, educate and facilitate the community in fire preparedness and prevention, and respond to any fires in the District in a timely and efficient manner.
As a board director, I would see it as my duty to help achieve these goals by assisting the District in outreach and education events/programs for the community, as well as taking on any administrative tasks required to allow the District's firefighters to operate on a day-to-day basis.
The board is tasked with oversight of the Fire Protection District to ensure that money is spent ethically and in accordance with the approved budget, that District policies are upheld, and that major decisions reflect the best interest of the District and Siletz community. As the leader of the District, my understanding is that the fire chief will serve as the main liaison with the board.
