I am a practicing attorney. I have wide resume of community service and have served on many boards including Umatilla Morrow Head Start, Hermiston Chamber of Commerce, City Council of Hermiston, and Stepping Stones Alliance. I have two children currently enrolled in the Hermiston School District so I have first had experience with how the position of the School Board and administration effect the community. I work professionally in the area of Juvenile Law which helps give me a wide view of the issues effecting youth both within and outside the school system.
The district is required to follow state and federal education policies.
Some of most urgent issues facing the District's schools are employee hiring and retention. It is difficult for the district to find qualified teachers and substitutes. The District needs to make sure it has the appropriate policies in place to attract qualified teachers and to keep retain them.
Another important issue facing the School District is adequate funding. With the current political shake ups regarding federal funding, the State of Oregon is going to have to pick up addition funding for the Schools. Adequate funding is and will continue to be a problem.
The District must also work to make sure that all students receive the appropriate services in a timely and effective manner.
