Examples include people’s utility districts, library districts, water districts, fire protection districts, and more. They are governed by a board of directors, which is responsible for management and financial accountability. Special districts are empowered to levy any necessary taxes and fees to fulfill their mandate. Board members are not paid but may receive a per diem reimbursement.Library districts provide access to educational and informational resources and programs. Your Experience/Qualifications Avid reader; Member Creswell Library Board since 2019; Retired High School Teacher
County Lane
Term 7/ 1/2020
Term Expires 6/30/2024
I'm an avid reader, a retired Physician's Assistant (Pediatrics), a retired high school Science Teacher and a father of two adult children. I am a co-coordinator of a volunteer group (IRC) at Creslane Elementary to help assist reading instruction in grades K-3.
Rapid cultural change in our society requires libraries to understand trends in reading and accessing information. We strive to understand our patrons and to welcome them to our community library. Our director and our board are continuously adjusting our technological and print resources and reaching out to residents to understand their needs. We just finished our Strategic Plan for 2025-2026 and will revisit the plan within the next year to adjust and change our priorities. This plan is available for viewing on the Creswell Library website.
Many of our patrons lack Internet access to the library. We offer library computer access and tech help for those who need it. We realize some people don't know how to use the resources of the library. We sponsor early childhood, kid and teen clubs as well as various social activities and classes for adults. Our state's student reading competency is hovering around 49% at the end of 3rd grade. We are forming bonds with the schools in the Creswell School District and with various childcare providers in our district. There are a significant number of Creswell citizens whose native language is not English. We have a Spanish language and bilingual selection of books. We realize that libraries need to change along with their population.
