There are 197 public school districts in Oregon, each governed by a board of education. School boards set goals, establish policies, oversee the performance of district schools, and negotiate contracts. The state Board of Education sets broader educational policies and standards that local schools are required to follow.Qualifications: Candidate must be a registered voter and a resident of the district for at least 1 year. Employees of the district are not eligible unless employed as a substitute driver. ORS 332.016 and 332.018(2)Term: 4 years

Your Experience/Qualifications Occupation: Associate Professor in Human Development and Family Sciences; Prior Governmental Experience includes: Corvallis School District Budget Committee (2021); Corvallis School Board (2021-present); Oregon’s Alcohol and Drug Policy Commission Prevention Committee (2024-present)
My professional career has been dedicated to supporting the well-being of children, youth, educators, and families. I have been an early childhood teacher, a parenting educator, a researcher focused on social and emotional learning programs, and a professor at Oregon State University, serving as the coordinator for the Oregon Parenting Education Collaborative. These experiences have given me an opportunity to work across all levels of the educational system with students, educators, families, and community partners. I have experience evaluating programs and managing multi-million dollar budgets. I am running for re-election to continue giving back to the community I love and call home.
My understanding is grounded in the belief that every student should have access to public education that is free from discrimination, meets their learning needs effectively, celebrates their identities, and provides the resources and support needed to achieve their short- and long-term personal, social, emotional, academic, and future career goals. This means complying with laws and policies that ensure equal opportunity and access for all students while prohibiting discrimination at the federal level (e.g., complying with civil rights laws, Title IX, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and complying with state laws that shape curriculum standards and graduation requirements, teacher certification requirements, and others.
The most urgent issue I believe we will face is insufficient funding for public education (especially given the ongoing need for schools to provide wraparound support for students, including academic, social, emotional, and physical well-being). Addressing this issue will require advocacy at the state and federal levels and strong collaboration with students, staff, district leaders, families, and community partners to ensure the community works together to find creative and sustainable solutions (while leveraging all possible resources) to ensure our district offers a supportive environment for staff and families and provides the best educational experience possible for every student.
