There are so many issues facing our school district today. Mental health and safety go hand in hand as a major problem in our schools. But we have to make sure that are children are educated in an environment that is morally and physically safe and that they are given the resources they need to succeed in life. It's a big job and getting more important every day.
I have a been a member of the Oconee County School Board for 5 terms. During that time I have attended 98% of the board meetings as well as attended many seminars and learning opportunities for board members. Our policies are updated periodically and require a good deal of reading and discussion to ensure we are making decisions based on the most up-to-date legal decisions. Most importantly, my interaction with students, teachers and administrators as well as parents keeps me aligned with what our community needs and expects.
My child was educated in Oconee County and I served on committees and parent organizations while she was in school. I still attend many events at the schools and have a good relationship with the administrators of our local schools. Being active in church, Rotary, and the local chamber allows me to interact with parents, students and school employees in several different settings.
As a board we have been watching some districts that have already implemented this law and it is working. I think that students will learn more and teachers will be able to teach more without the presence of a cellphone in the classroom. For high school students I believe that cell phone usage should be restricted only during school hours. Younger ages may be even more restrictive. Children will adapt over time and have a greater opportunity to learn without disruptions. It is a state law and I hope people will be supportive of the intent of this law.
I have a strong desire to serve my community. My support of our school district and organizations that are active within the schools is well known. But I know there are people who don't see eye-to-eye with decisions made and actions taken from time to time. The best way to have your voice heard is to call and talk with your school board member. Social media and gossip can harm so many people but a heartfelt conversation can open up new views and opportunities for understanding. I encourage people to stay in touch with their representative rather than react to allegations. Our students deserve the best and working together we can give them what they need.
