The two most pressing challenges facing Florida are the high cost of housing and attacks on women's rights. As a New Democrat in the Florida House, I will prioritize these issues within my first six months in office. To address housing affordability, I will advocate for increased funding for affordable housing projects and push for policies that incentivize the construction of low-cost housing units. On women's rights, I will work across party lines to ensure that Amendment 4, protecting reproductive rights, is fully implemented and upheld. Additionally, I will champion legislation that guarantees comprehensive healthcare access and safeguards women's autonomy over their own bodies.
With my long-term experience as a housing commissioner, I understand the urgency of Florida's affordable housing crisis. To address this, I support measures to fully utilize the Sadowsky Fund for low-income and affordable housing projects. Additionally, I will seek federal dollars to bolster state funding, ensuring we maximize resources for new developments. By advocating for public-private partnerships and streamlining permitting processes, we can accelerate the construction of affordable housing, ultimately providing Florida families with the stability they deserve & stimulating our economy.
To improve voter access and participation in Florida, several legislative actions are necessary. I support expanding and allocating funds for vote-by-mail and early voting to make voting more convenient. Additionally, we must increase the number of polling places, particularly in traditionally marginalized communities, to reduce wait times and improve accessibility. Investing in multilingual materials and hiring poll workers proficient in the languages spoken in each region will ensure that all voters can easily understand and navigate the voting process.
As a climate justice advocate, I understand the urgency and the science behind climate change. To protect Florida's environment and natural resources, I propose several legislative actions. First, stronger regulations on pollution and emissions to reduce harmful impacts on air and water quality. Secon funding for the preservation of wetlands and Everglades restoration projects as well as Forest’s like Split Oak. Third, I will push for renewable energy sources and incentives for green infrastructure. Lastly, I will support coastal resilience programs to protect from sea rise.
As a Latina, mother of women, and person of faith, I firmly support the right of women to decide on matters concerning their own bodies. Access to abortion is a fundamental right, and government should not interfere with personal medical decisions. Women must have the autonomy to make choices that are best for their health and their families. I believe in protecting reproductive rights and ensuring that every woman has access to safe and legal abortion services. It is imperative that we respect women's rights and trust them to make informed decisions about their own bodies.
To better protect our youth and the public from gun violence, I support a progressive, holistic approach. This includes implementing universal background checks, closing loopholes, and banning assault weapons. I also advocate for culturally appropriate education programs that address the root causes of violence, promote conflict resolution, and raise awareness about gun safety. Additionally, I support increased funding for mental health services and community-based initiatives that engage at-risk youth and foster safer, more supportive environments for all Floridians.
To ensure all Florida students have access to high-quality education, I will support our teachers and their unions, advocating for better pay and working conditions. I will enhance ESOL programs to ensure non-native English speakers receive the support they need to succeed. Additionally, I will fight for adequate funding for public schools, ensuring they have the resources necessary for modern classrooms, updated materials, and comprehensive student services. By prioritizing these areas, we can create an equitable and thriving educational environment for every student in Florida.
