The most pressing challenge we face today is the threat to our democracy. Across the country, rightwing politicians and candidates are trying to suppress voters, undermine our electoral process, and distort the balance of power through partisan gerrymandering. We must pass legislation like the For the People Act, which supports automatic voter registration, improves access to absentee voting and voting by mail, and enhances voting system security. It also tackles the problem of partisan gerrymandering by establishing independent redistricting commissions. Finally, it introduces a new public financing system for federal campaigns, which would reduce the influence of big money in politics.
My focus in Congress has always been to fight for the people of Maine who sent me to Washington. My policy priorities are centered around supporting Maine families, investing in our coastal and rural communities, working with our farmers and fishermen, and protecting our environment. My primary platform for this work is the House Appropriations Committee, where my colleagues and I on both sides of the aisle deliberate on our priorities in the annual federal budget. As a senior member of this committee, I fight to bring much-needed federal resources to Maine and do oversight to ensure that agencies and programs are working as they should.
I have fought for my entire career to create an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top. Increasing wages has been at the top of my list, from increasing the federal minimum wage for the first time since 2009 to strengthening the labor protections and the right to form a union. Still, essential needs are too often out of reach. Access to affordable housing, child care, and health care are all vital to a vibrant economy. I fight for these priorities through my work as a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, pushing to fund essential programs like Rental Assistance, Head Start, and the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
Climate change is an existential threat that is already impacting communities in Maine and across America, which is why it’s one of my top priorities in Congress. I proudly helped pass the landmark Inflation Reduction Act, the most substantial climate investment in U.S. history and includes funding to build clean energy manufacturing and reduce emissions across the economy. As lead Democrat on the Interior Appropriations Subcommittee, I fight for funding to agencies like the EPA so they have the resources and expertise to deliver on our climate goals. I’ve introduced several bills to address climate concerns, including the Agriculture Resilience Act, which tackles the intersection of agriculture and climate.
Mainers are experiencing historically acute challenges with housing affordability, and the ripple effects are having major impacts on our community and economy. We need a comprehensive approach to tackle this crisis. That means increasing the supply of affordable housing, including expanding the Low Income Housing Tax Credit and supporting the HOME Investment Partnerships Program; making significant investments in rental assistance programs to ensure that families can make ends meet; and bolstering resources and services for unhoused Mainers. I’ve also sought to support housing projects directly, securing more than $6.4 million in the 2024 appropriations bill to fund projects that preserve or create new housing options for my constituents.
Like most Mainers, I was devastated and outraged when the deeply partisan U.S. Supreme Court overturned nearly 50 years of an established right to body autonomy. But my Democratic colleagues and I are fighting back to restore the protections established under Roe v. Wade. First and foremost, we must codify the right to an abortion by passing the Women’s Health Protection Act, which House Democrats have passed multiple times. I have also supported pushing Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal health programs to cover the service. I’m also concerned about the precedent this ruling sets for other rights based on the right to privacy, including birth control.
