We need to create greater family economic stability through more affordable housing, a better child care system, accessible and affordable health care for all, educational opportunities, support for those who wish to age in place. Everyone deserves to live in safe communities. The catastrophic consequences of a warming climate must be addressed as well as the threats to our democracy and judicial system.
I try to make myself as accessible to my constituents as possible, knocking on doors, routinely inviting students to visit me at the State House and talking with groups and school classes about the importance of engaging in their community and running for office. I actively promote legislation that expands the ease with which people can vote and participate in elections.
As Senate chair of the Appropriations Committee, I oversaw the funding of over 100 million new dollars to help meet the need for affordable housing in the state. Some of this money will go toward the creation of new affordable housing, some will go for warming centers for the unhoused, some will go for students experiencing temporary homelessness and some will go to provide rent relief to avoid eviction. While we still have much to do to ensure that all Mainers are adequately housed, I was proud of the commitment we made in the last legislative session toward achieving this goal.
In my 25 years of public service ( 8 years on the Lewiston School Committee and 18 in the State Legislature) I have worked hard to bring people together and to develop consensus on policy issues before us. I have served on the State Legislature's Appropriations Committee for 15 years, which has given me a perspective on all areas of state government and how they impact the lives of Maine citizens. I believe in the capacity of government to make a positive difference in the lives of people and that elected officials should serve the public with integrity, professionalism and compassion.
