Safety in our schools and communities, the rights of voters and women, affordable housing for all Mainers and addressing the environmental crisis are the greatest challenges faces Maine right now.
The more individuals I can talk to that come to understand their involvement in the local schools, libraries, town and school boards really matters the more open our democratic system will remain. We cannot neglect engaging everyone if we want the constitutional democracy to continue.
I supported the recent local Affordable Housing referendum. Though it failed, I continue to engage with those opposed to find solutions for our community. LD 1345, sponsored by my current district 110 Representative, is a strong example of the direction we should be going to protect and provide housing opportunities for all Mainers.
After graduating from Bowdoin and teaching abroad in Taiwan, I returned to Maine with a Masters in Teaching and have taught in Maine public schools and university for over 25 years. I have seen the needs of Mainers at many different socio-economic and cultural levels. As a school board member in MSAD51, being able to prioritize the needs of a growing district and recognize the complexity of issues confronting the community is essential. I have acted in my capacity as a school board to protect freedom of speech at the local level. Protecting our reading choices, our health choices and our communities are all areas I have worked toward as a part of Planned Parenthood and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense.
